Giving Opportunities

Annual Fund

“... At heart, stewardship is about where we place our trust.” - The Rev. William C. Green

The seminary's Annual Fund is the cornerstone of financial support for the school - it is the largest source of unrestricted income and accounts for approximately one third of the seminary's budget. Our fiscal year is July 1 to June 30.

How does the Annual Fund impact the school?
Annual Fund gifts keep the cost of tuition as affordable as possible for our 220 plus students by providing for the necessary operating costs. The Annual Fund supports our dedicated faculty and staff, our well-maintained campus and buildings, library collections and acquisitions, computers and technology, challenging curriculum, and continuing education and professional growth opportunities for clergy and lay people.

Commemorative Gifts
Annual Fund gifts and other gifts to the school can be designated in honor, in memory, or in celebration of a special person or event.

Student Scholarships
Scholarship support for students is essential to recruit and retain women and men for ministry and leadership in church and community. More than 80 percent of degree students receive scholarship support of 60 percent or more toward tuition. Gifts for scholarships can be made in several ways. You may contribute a gift of any amount to the scholarship fund; designate your gift for a particular UTS student; or establish an endowed scholarship fund where the principal remains and grows and a percentage of the interest is used each year for scholarship support.

Donor Recognition Societies
The Joshua Society recognizes special friends who have contributed cumulative gifts of $50,000 or more.

The Bossard-Ward Society recognizes alumni/ae whose cumulative giving in all categories totals $10,000 or more.

The Barnabas Heritage Society recognizes friends who have included the seminary in their estate plans or made other deferred gifts.

Planned or Estate Gifts

“... the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” - 2 Corinthians 9:6

Planned gifts are like the seeds of an apple - you cannot see them, but they are crucial for the apple's existence. The seminary, like the apple, needs planned gifts or seeds to grow and flourish; we cannot live without them. Planned or estate gifts are different from Annual Fund gifts because they are from a person's accumulated assets and reflect a person's ongoing commitment to the school by providing resources for the school's future and a legacy for themselves. People who have included the seminary in their estate plans or have made a deferred gift become members of the Barnabas Heritage Society. We are deeply grateful to our friends and alumni/ae who have invested in the seminary's future.

Bequests and other Planned Gifts
Many friends of the seminary have made bequests through their wills to provide for United's future. A bequest is the easiest kind of planned gift to make. You can make a bequest in your will by leaving a fixed amount of your assets, a percentage of your assets, or the residue of your estate to the seminary. Bequests may be made using cash, securities (stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit), property, or a paid life insurance policy. If you wish, you may designate your gift for a particular purpose such as the scholarship fund, library, chapel, or other special interest of yours, or endow a specific program.

To include United in your will, we suggest you consult with an attorney or use the following language for your bequest: “I give to United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, New Brighton, Minnesota, a 501©(3), Minnesota nonprofit corporation, the following (amount of cash, securities, or other specific asset, or percentage of my will, or the residue of my estate) to be used for general unrestricted purposes (or for a designated purpose.)”

There are many other planned giving options to consider such as charitable gift annuities, deferred gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, retirement accounts, life insurance, or real estate. The seminary would be happy to discuss any of these options with you.

If you have already included United Theological Seminary in your will or have made another kind of planned gift, please let us know so we can thank you and include you in the Barnabas Heritage Society.

For more information on bequests and other planned gifts, please contact Julie Brown at 651-255-6111.

We invite you to support UTS through one or more of United's Giving Opportunities with our deep appreciation.
