Paul
Olm-Stoelting ’46 ’74 was recognized
as the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus on April 25, 2007, at the
annual Alumni/ae Convocation Banquet. During his many years
in ministry, Paul touched numerous lives in his service to
the church, community, and United Theological Seminary.
“The
Church has been Paul’s life. He has been a hard working,
dedicated, and much loved and faithful servant of the Lord
and the Church.”
–
Carroll Olm ’48, loving brother and nominator
of
Paul
Olm-Stoelting for the Distinguished
Alumni/ae Award.
Following
graduation and degrees from Mission House and United seminaries,
Paul served as a church pastor for 18 years from 1946-1964
in three very different settings in Wisconsin: in a two point
charge in a rural setting, in a fast growing suburban setting,
and in the largest congregation in the Wisconsin Conference
of the United Church of Christ. Under his leadership as pastor,
minister, and teacher, worship service attendance grew substantially,
and children’s and youth programs thrived.
In
1964 Paul left pastoral ministry to serve as association minister
at the Northeast Wisconsin Area United Church of Christ. During
his eight years there, he excelled in his relationship with
pastors and in the development of a program for lay leadership.
He then served as association minister for the Northeast Ohio
Area United Church of Christ for 15 years where he concentrated
his efforts on Our Churches Wider Ministry and other missions.
Paul retired from active ministry in 1987.
As
a loyal alumnus of United, Paul promoted United wherever he
served, in the pulpit and in his role with the denomination.
Last year, Paul celebrated his 60th class anniversary from
seminary and was the only representative of his class present.
He and his wife Keran have established The Olm-Stoelting Scholarship
Fund to recognize the major role seminary education played
in his life.
Retirement
has not been a time to rest or ‘kick back’ for
Paul. He and Keran, who is a part time associate minister
at the Venice United Church of Christ, designed and conducted
worship experiences in period costume based on the history,
polity, and practices of the UCC to more than 100 churches
in Illinois and most recently in Florida.
Paul
has been highly involved in mission outreach, tutors children
in an after school program for African American students,
volunteers in community organizations, writes, and spends
time with his family. In a recent letter to the editor of
a UCC publication, Paul relates the essence of his life, “Oh,
how I love my Church!”
